SEMBRAR is designed for rural, K-12 populations. Generational knowledge refers to the information, skills, and wisdom passed down, heavily influencing how communities interact with the environment.

This includes Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK), which encapsulates the understanding of local ecosystems, biodiversity, and sustainable practices (like crop rotation and water conservation) honed over generations.

SEMILLAS is a research and education initiative that empowers youth, especially multilingual learners, through place-based science education. Our model integrates language development, culturally sustaining practices, and knowledge building for informed action, helping students connect science learning to their communities and futures.

Commitment to Excellence

Through teacher professional learning, family engagement, and community-based activities, SEMILLAS promotes the simultaneous integration of science content and language development. We use placemaking and futures-thinking pedagogies to foster climate literacy and prepare the next generation of informed citizens, scientists, and decision-makers.
