Sowing Environmental Multilingualism: Integrating Learning, Linguistics, and Action in Science

A research project that supports science/STEM teachers in adapting units to locally relevant environmental issues and disasters such as flooding, water pollution, shifts in sea life, hurricanes, using placemaking pedagogies and futures thinking. We examine how teachers draw on students’ backgrounds, language resources, and community knowledge to integrate local issues, respond to evolving student understandings, and foster dialogue that builds community and professional learning. Our goal is to empower historically underserved students, including multilingual learners by centering local knowledge and cultural resources to meet NGSS and state standards. SEMILLAS is funded by the Empowering K-8 Youth Through Place-Based Education Projects and Program of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Gulf Research Program (GRP).
